When I thought about being a mom, the things I most looked forward to were those quiet little moments for which you cannot plan. They come when you least expect them, I think. Last night Mack and I laid down in our back yard and looked at clouds. And just before that he was contemplating his professional goals.

I need to return to that last video, because he says ‘ewwwwwww’ to that brussel sprout and its the best part. But I’m playing with these little short videos and trying to make them digestible for the blog. Read the rest of this entry »

I decided to focus a little more on video to capture those moments that I don’t have the words to convey. Apparently I was without words for most of the last two years. But since I’m not a baby book, first tooth, locks of hair, hope chest, scrapbooking kind of mom, I decided I need to focus on keeping the memories where I am comfortable. And that’s here. On the internets.
So I’m back at it in earnest. And I’m opening it up for the world to watch/read/comment. But I’m assuming most of the world won’t care. So, HI MOM. And hi to all of my friends and family who might be interested in my little guy’s antics. There’s nothing controversial here. But maybe we can make it funny. Or cheeky. And smart sometimes. We’l see.
For now, check out Mack the chef. And stay tuned.

I’m not going to spend any time lamenting my crappy blogging follow through. One would hope that the time I’m not spending here I’m spending with my boy. And its true. Sort of.
I woke up one day recently and discovered that my son is a person. He’s not a baby any more. And he’s more than that generic term they give all toddling creatures. He’s more than a toddler. He’s a little guy. A little person. Other people notice it too. Here’s what I know about this little person — he’s funny. He’s a hambone. He likes to stop dead in his tracks when he hears a tune he digs, and then without skipping a beat he bends way over and shakes his badonkadonk like he means business. This boy knows how to GET DOWN.

Mack helped his moms with yardwork recently and I was amazed at what an adventure our autumn-dead yard turned out to be.

Ok, so I figured out my problem with blogging these days is being overly ambitious in the desire to do it and barely ambitious when it comes to execution. My solution is to try to post less narrative, more often. I’m not sure that this is a real solution or just a little sugar pill for me. But I miss my friends in the blogosphere and I miss the conversation. I’ll try anything to get back in the groove. Besides, I’m hoping this blog can be a gift to my little guy some time. I just want him to know I was paying attention. I tried not to miss too much.
In the spirit of paying attention, here’s my buddy on Halloween. He was a dinosaur. The crazy thing is, this was the year of the dinosaur. Everywhere we went there were little green dinosaurs in home-made costumes with big stuffed tails. But, well, I have to say, mine was the cutest.

The phrase ‘Number 2′ takes on a whole new meaning when you’re a mom. In this case, however, I’m only referring to the 2nd blog post. I’ve been blogging since the end of 1999, so it’s odd to be looking at a blank page and wondering what direction it will take. I never thought I’d run out of energy for words. But it seems that motherhood sucks words from your brain. I’ve got enough to say things like ‘backwards down the stairs, buddy’ or ‘two hands, dude’ or ‘inside voice, Macky.’ The ‘inside voice’ thing is a joke since he has no idea what I’m talking about and he’s really just discovering his voice.

I never thought I’d be one of those mothers that constantly finds reason to talk about their kid. But, as it turns out, that’s exactly the kind of mother that I am. Probably because I’m constantly amazed at this little person he’s becoming. I honestly had no idea. I mean, I knew that adding a little person to our world would change the way we view it. I just didn’t know that adding that person would allow me to see it all over again.
